6 Tips to Stay Safe While Using Our Free ATMs

ATMs are a quick and convenient way to take out cash when you need it. And with NB Checking, we provide full ATM reimbursement at every ATM in the world, so you can save money on ATM fees any time you use another bank’s ATMs. While this feature is great, we want to make sure that you are taking the right precautions to proactively keep yourself safe and secure when you visit an ATM. Practice these six tips to help protect yourself next time you go to take out cash.

Be aware of your surroundings

It’s important that you know what is going on around you, especially at night. Make sure that you choose an ATM that is in a well-lit, public area. If you see a suspicious person or sense suspicious circumstances, do not use that ATM. If possible, it is also a good idea to bring someone with you when you visit an ATM.

Have your card ready

As you approach the ATM, have your debit card in your hand and ready to be used. It is best to avoid looking through your wallet or purse once you arrive.

Inspect the ATM

Visually inspect the ATM for potential skimming devices upon arrival. A card skimmer is something fraudsters use to steal your card information when you insert it to withdraw money. Pay attention to determine if the card reader feels loose or is a different color than the Bank’s branding. If there is resistance when pressing the keyboard buttons, scratches, damaged or misfit pieces, these are often signs that a skimmer is attached to the ATM.

Keep your personal identification number (PIN) personal

When entering your PIN into the ATM, use your body or other hand to shield the keyboard from others. If someone is behind you, make sure that they cannot see you enter your PIN. If someone is lingering behind you closely, leave and go back later.

Take receipts or transaction records

To keep your account information confidential and avoid your personal information ending up in the wrong hands, always take your receipts or transaction records with you.

Don’t count or visually display any money

After receiving money from the ATM, immediately put it in your pocket, wallet or purse. Make sure you do not count your cash in public, but rather wait until you are in your car or another secure place.

By keeping these tips in mind, you will be more aware of what is going on around you and eliminate any potential risk to your personal and financial information. Make sure to monitor your bank statements and balances daily with NB Online and Mobile Banking and report any problems you see to us. It is our top priority to keep you safe, so if you suspect you’ve become a victim of fraud, call 1-781-444-2100 or your local branch as soon as possible.
