The National Automated Clearing House (NACHA) is implementing a new operating rule effective March 20, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce fraud and improve the recovery of funds when fraud occurs.
Beginning on or before, March 20, 2026, all payroll batches that include direct deposits for salaries, wages, bonuses and commissions must use “PAYROLL” in the Company Entry Description field. Files that do not use the standardized “Payroll” description may be rejected, which could delay processing. To ensure compliance: the word “PAYROLL” must appear within the first seven characters of the Company Entry Description field. This new requirement will help financial institutions monitor ACH transactions more effectively and reduce fraud involving payroll redirections.
