Phone scams are becoming increasingly popular with fraudsters who use sophisticated methods to target their victims. From fake numbers to urgent-sounding threats, scammers exploit your trust and emotions to steal sensitive information or money. It’s essential to stay informed and recognize the warning signs. Here are six ways to spot a phone scam and protect yourself:
1. “My caller ID said it was Needham Bank.”
Be cautious of phone calls that appear to come from “Needham Bank.” Even if the caller ID looks correct, we will NEVER ask for personal information such as your:
- Full account number
- Online banking credentials
- Full Social Security Number
- Full debit card number and/or PIN
2. “They claimed to be the IRS and said I owed money.”
Hang up if you get a call from the IRS requesting financial information. The IRS doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by phone—they will only reach out through the mail on official letterhead.
3. “Apple/Microsoft said something was wrong with my computer and that I needed service.”
Ignore calls offering technical support and asking for personal or financial information. Technology companies like Apple or Microsoft won’t make unsolicited calls like this.
4. “My relative was in danger and needed money to help.”
Don’t wire money to someone claiming to be your grandchild or relative in need. Fraudsters often pose as someone you know, asking for funds quickly due to an emergency abroad or while traveling, to pay rent, or for other urgent expenses.
5. “Amazon said they needed an updated payment method.”
Avoid providing new debit or credit card information over the phone. Fraudsters pretend to be Amazon or other retailers, claiming that the payment method on file for your account is invalid.
6. “I won a contest I didn’t even enter!”
Remember that you can’t win a contest you didn’t enter. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
